Rethymnon, the third largest city on Crete after Heraklion and Chania, is the capital of the prefecture of Rethymnon. Today’s city is built on the same site as ancient Rithymna. Crowned by Fortezza, the citadel of the city, the old town of Rethymnon is purely magical. A maze full of surprises. A journey back to the Venetian era. Walk to the Venetian port with the lighthouse and enjoy traditional flavors, and so much more, in its shops overlooking the sea.

The visitor has the opportunity to enjoy the sea, the sun and the Cretan hospitality, while also admiring the numerous historical monuments and attractions. In the new city, there are several Ottoman buildings and mosques that have survived from the Turkish rule. Rethymnon has an Archaeological, a Folklore, an Ecclesiastical Museum and a Gallery. While Rethymnon is described as a college city, it is an ideal summer destination for a quiet holiday. On the other hand, in the winter, the city teems with thousands of visitors who gather to watch or take part in the famous Carnival of Rethymnon, a cultural norm that is rumored to have started in 1960 and breaks all records in the flow of visitors with more and more events every year. One thing is for certain: whenever you decide to visit the city of Rethymnon, you will find something to enchant you and make you add it to your frequent travel destinations.
