Heraklion is the largest city on Crete and the capital of the prefecture of Heraklion. It is the seat of the Region of Crete and the fourth most populous municipality in Greece. Besides Athens, Heraklion has one of the largest airports in the country, “Nikos Kazantzakis”, which is the first airport in the number of charters, as well as a port with frequent ferry services. Heraklion houses the central services and the largest scientific stations of Crete and is the commercial center of the island. In Heraklion there are two of the monuments that can be found on the list of UNESCO monuments-to-be: Knossos and the Venetian fortifications.
Regarding the origin of the name of the city, the legend has it that Rhea, Zeus’s mother, assigned his protection to the demons “Kourites”, fearing the wrath of his father, Cronos. One of the Kourites, Idaean Herakles, gave his name to Heraklion. The city has a great history depicted in ancient monuments and museums that narrate the city’s past, while among the modern concrete buildings the visitor can see small “oases” that will remind them something of the beautiful Megalo Kastro [Great Castle] of the Mediterranean. The history of Heraklion begins in the Minoan era and continues until modern Greek history with the city being a key player in important historical events. It is a city that combines everything; it can please even the most demanding visitor, as it offers a wide range of attractions along with a vivid nightlife, thus it is ideal for young people, families with children or even older people who want a more relaxed experience.
In many parts of Heraklion one can admire the huge Venetian walls that surround the city and had made it the best fortified city in the Mediterranean. Like every other center, Heraklion has a rich market, as well as countless dining options with traditional cuisine and its modern variations and different options for all tastes. The city also offers vibrant nightlife for all ages, such as high decibel levels for younger people, as well as traditional cafés for those who want some peace and quiet.
It is undoubtedly an attractive city for all tastes with a pleasant daily life, which travels you to historical eras with a modern touch.
